If you are going to the Big Island of Hawaii, you might want to take a day or two and explore the wonder of some of its gorgeous waterfalls. They are situated all around the island with a somewhat higher concentration at the eastern part, around the city Hilo.

Akaka Falls that is located about 10 minutes drive north of Hilo is an amazing masterpiece of natural beauty. To get there you have to do about half a mile of hiking through the rain forest and then you arrive at this 420 feet tall waterfall, with water cascading down into a blue pool.

On your way up the trail to Akaka you will encounter the smaller, gorgeous waterfall named Kahuna. These two waterfalls, along with the beauty of the trail makes this hike one of you best picks for an extraordinary nature experience. Because of its easy access it's also great if you don't have much time but still want to get in touch with some beautiful landmarks of the Big Island.

Waipi'o Valley is situated on the north side of the island and this beautiful valley offers a lot of waterfalls rushing down the hillsides along with a lush and flourishing nature.

You can get to the valley by car, and then you preferably take a few hours or more and explore the area on foot. One of the most beautiful waterfalls here is called Hi'ilawe, but you will find hundreds of them, rushing down the hills of the this wonderful valley.

Another gorgeous waterfall, located inland of Hilo is the Rainbow Falls. It's easy to get to, since you're able to drive all the way upfront to it, and it gives you a spectacular view of the water falling down about 80 feet into a large turquoise pool, almost 100 feet wide. In the area are also hiking trails for those that wants to get a closer contact with the nature and to get a different view of the falls. Best time to go here is in the morning, when the sun is rising and shining onto the lush rain forest.

North of Hilo, a bit further away than Akaka, is the World Botanical Garden. In this garden is a three level waterfall that is called Uma Uma Falls. The water pours gently into the tranquil pools and this in combination with the surroundings can give you the feeling of having arrived to paradise.

If you're visiting this remarkable island, you definitely don't want to miss out on viewing some of its amazing waterfalls. The ones here are some of the best picks and can contribute in making your Hawaii vacation a very special time.
