There are many kinds of motorcycle helmets; there are good points and bad points for each one. These helmets not only shield the head from harm but also feel nice to wear. Each characteristic should be thought of in the decision to purchase a motorcycle helmet. Lets look over the numerous kinds of these helmets.

The full-face helmet is very generally used as protection when riding motorcycles. This helmet envelopes the full face and head. Did you know that above 1/3 of the motorcycle accident the riders have mostly facial injuries? It helps to know that this helmet prevents some of these from happening in the first place. Comfort is not at the top of the list of features for this helmet though. The big beef with this helmet is how weighty and not very comfortable to wear it is. A few riders have said that they believe they have helped their necks be hurt because of then weight. No clinical proof available for backing this up though.

Half helmets are another category of motorcycle helmets. These do have the lowest rating on the safety scale as far as approved legal helmets go. These helmets are bad for your lower head are and the rear of your neck because they offer no protection due to being so high cut and round. They also do not help the face from being injured because like the open face design they have no face shielding. They are also critiques for slip and sliding on the head due to their shape.

Take the full-face helmet and remove the face protection and chin guard and you have what is known as the open face helmet. The one plus of this helmet is more range in vision but the minus is no facial security in safety inducing for the chin. Some of these open face helmets have the added capability of letting you add your own visor. Multiple numbers of riders enjoy using these helmets.

Maybe you would like a flip up visor on your helmet? The flip up helmet offers this along with covering the face, chin and head. With this helmet you can just simply lift up the face and chin guard. This gives you the best of two helmets combined in one by offering the total functionality that the full-face is along with the fact of ease to get to your face when needed as in then open face one.

Motocross is a blast to do but does take some special protection for the rider. The motocross helmet provides just such protection. With a specially designed chin and visor area that takes a bashing that happens in a fall in motocross so that the face does not have to take a bashing. Also certain models of these helmets permit the use of goggles by the rider.

Now for the illegal use of motorcycle helmets there is the beanie helmet, which is mainly for show. They are lightweight and only cover the top of the head. They in no way meet the standards of the DOT or Snell for safety. The riders that want to fool the law into thinking that they are conforming to the laws so they are not ticketed usually wear these helmets. No one should be living so dangerously as to not protect themselves like this. These are not sanctioned for use as a safety device.

Unless you just have a hard time making up your mind there are enough different types of motorcycle helmets on the market today to accommodate you. One tip to use in deciding is to consider how daring you get with your motorcycle travels to help with how high a functionality you need in your helmet. The main idea to get into your head about helmets is that you need to wear them every time you ride to safeguard yourself against injury. Umber one on your list should always be safety.
