Hunting is something that has been going on ever since the ancient times. This used to be done as a form of survival, for food. Hunting isn't all about luck. If you know where to look for game then chances are you will find it. So make sure that you know the area you will be hunting in by pre scouting it. If you have limited time check with the department in charge and they will be able to give you information.

Brief yourself, know what types of food and shelter the elks will be seeking at the time that you go. Things like these may vary depending on season. Remember that if you know where to look for their source of food and shelter then they will be close by. You can also opt to hire a guide if you aren't too confident about going out on your own.
