The Pug dog breed is one of today's most popular breeds and anyone who is thinking about adding one to their family should become familiar with the specifics of pug dog health care.

The Pug as a breed has been known for over 3000 years. They were accepted as a member of the AKC Toy Group in 1885 and are known for their flat, pushed in face which is wrinkly as well as their curly tail and short fur. Pugs have a hefty short body, usually weighing between 13 to 20 lbs and standing about 10 to 14 inches high.

As it usually is in nature, some of the very things which make a pug so cute and adorable are also the very things that require a little bit of extra care in order to avoid some of the health problems specific to the breed.

The folded skin of the pug is one of them. The wrinkles of the skin are prone to infections by nature. Therefore, always keep your dog well groomed and bathed properly and check with the Vet at the onset of any infection. Make sure to keep the area between the wrinkles dirt and dust free so that bacteria does not grow there.

Another common problem with pug dog health are the eyes. Pug eyes are not well protected because of the way their eyes are shaped and the where the eyes are on the face. This could lead to injuries and other complications. You should regularly check your pug's eyes for ulcerations and make sure you get your dog to the vet immediately if you see any problems.

Weight gain is another problem, commonly found in pugs, which could have an adverse effect on their health. Pugs as a breed has a tendency to overeat, so be careful about your pets food intake and maintain its weight at healthy limits.

Pugs are also sensitive to very hot temperatures so you need to be careful not to keep your pet under extreme conditions for long time. Never keep your dog outside where there is no shade or locked up in a car during summers. Overheating can make breathing difficult for pugs.

A good health care regimen for your pet Pug means a long, happy life together. Responsible pet ownership includes taking care of your pet. Proper nutrition, grooming and regular visits to your vet, will assure proper Pug dog health is maintained.
