Someone who smokes or has ever smoked a cigarette in his or her life knows the consequences of their actions. Cigarettes are an addiction and when you do not kick the habit soon enough it can become fatal to you and those around you. If you have yet to realize the addiction you have to cigarettes or don’t think you should quit, you need to keep reading.
There are plenty of good reasons why someone should quit smoking as soon as possible, and here they are, number five to number one.
5. If you quit now you will not have to worry about spending that extra five dollars a pack or forty dollars per carton of cigarettes. This means more spending money for you.
4. Quitting will help you look and feel younger. Ever noticed the lines on some ones face that has smoked for many years? You won’t have to worry about that anymore. You will also be more energetic and want to go out and do things you didn’t want to do before, like sky diving (just an example, try at your own risk).
3. Smoking not only harms you but also those around you. Second hand smoke kills more non smokers every day than smokers alone.
2. You will not have the smell of cigarettes on your clothes, in your hair, home, or car.
1. Smoking kills. Plain and simple, this is the number one reason you should quit today. With every cigarette you light up you take approximately 20 minutes off your life. Bet you never thought of it that way.
Now, I know quitting can be hard, especially if you try to quit cold turkey after years of smoking. Have faith in yourself and those around you. With the support of people around you, you will be able to quit in no time and with ease. Follow the next few steps and you will be on your way to kicking the habit for good.
Step one, forget about the cravings. Don’t replace smoking with eating; doing so can lead to more health problems such as obesity. Don’t starve yourself either; eat healthy just like you would any other time.
Step two, change your routine. Try to avoid the places you used to go when you did smoke. Seeing others smoke just makes you want to pick up the habit again. Try new places, eat somewhere you have never been before or maybe go to a restaurant that doesn’t have a smoking section. This will also help you cut back on the cravings.
Step three, find a support group. If your friends and family members show little or no support of you quitting, there are always support groups that can help. Look in your local phone book or check online to find one that is best for you.
Step four, see a doctor. If other options are not or have not worked for you, you may need to see a doctor. Your doctor will be able to prescribe something that will help. You may also purchase nicotine gum and patches over the counter at any local pharmacy. Be sure if you are put on a medication that you follow doctor’s order 100%. If you do not follow what the doctor tells you, this medication may not work.
Step five, be prepared for withdraws. Like with any hardcore drug or alcohol addiction, withdraws are normal. Your body has become accustom to having nicotine. When these withdraws come about, try to ignore them. This will be hard but you can do it, have faith. Find an activity to take your mind off the cravings, go to the park, or just go out for some fresh air. This will help you tremendously.
Finally, quitting can be a chore in itself and I know because I am quitting too. Just take these reasons for quitting into account every time you have a craving. Follow the steps to keep you from wanting another cigarette, and you will be happy, healthy, and tobacco free.
