Postpartum Depression

What is the happiest day of a woman’s life? The answer is the day she gives birth to her children. So why do so many women feel as though they are unloved, alone, or unloving toward their new bundle of joy? The answer to this is unknown, but you should know that you are not alone if you are having or have had these feelings. Over 80% of women experience some type of mood disturbance after pregnancy.

More often than not, these symptoms only last up to two weeks. Although, some cases have been worse with symptoms lasting longer and leading to a more serious state of depression. If your symptoms seem to be lasting longer than expected you should seek medical attention immediately.

Postpartum depression is a state of depression that may occur soon after giving birth to you bundle of joy. This condition can occur within a few months after child birth and will occur in about 20% of women. If you have been depressed in the past or feel as though you have inadequate social support you are at a higher risk of postpartum depression.

Many symptoms include feelings of depression, tearfulness, trouble sleeping, thoughts of suicide, appetite problems, and inability to concentrate. Along with these feelings you will begin to worry more about the health and well-being of your child. You may even begin to have negative thoughts about the baby leading to development of harmful thoughts towards the baby.

The cause of this depression are still unknown but is believed that a hormone imbalance plays a role. Along with mental illness, any type of conflict in a marriage, financial state, and lack of support from family and friends.

If you feel as though you may be suffering from postpartum depression you should contact your physician as soon as possible. Your physician will be able to diagnose your symptoms and tell you if this is what it is. Keep in mind that over 80% of women suffer from this condition and it will go away on its own. However, in most cases it does not just go away and should be treated immediately.
