It is an established and common reaction to try using over-the-counter medication for yeast infections of the vagina. Yet, recent studies have cast doubt on the efficacy of such medication to really cure yeast infection. These medications may be able to bring temporary relief, but it is now believed that they will do nothing to cure yeast infection on a permanent basis.

There are different versions of medications available over-the-counter for vaginal yeast infection. Pills, lotions and creams are all available giving a choice to the typical sufferer of ways to relieve vaginal yeast infection. Most of these medications use at least one of the four main types of products following: miconazole, butoconazole nitrate, tioconazole and clotrimazole. Each of these products can be very effective in destroying the cell wall of the Canada microbe, which then gives temporary relief from the infection. However, attacking the Canada organism itself is not the same as solving the underlying cause, which led to the unfounded multiplication of this otherwise inoffensive fungus. Other common types of medication available over-the-counter include antihistamines, also known as topical anesthetics. They too served to relieve symptoms but despite using such medication against yeast infection of the vagina, the source of the problem is never properly addressed. Hence these medications remain ineffective despite the intensive publicity and marketing that is done for them.

Over-the-counter medication: the drawbacks

Medication bought over-the-counter for yeast infection of the vagina may have a number of drawbacks. Some of them include:

1) Too readily available: many people make an incorrect diagnosis of the symptoms and conclude that they have used infection without confirmation from their doctor. It is all too easy for them to obtain these medications that in fact may be harmful if there is really no used infection anyway.

2) Secondary effects: over-the-counters may put your liver and kidneys at risk if you prolong their use. Long-term application is therefore to be avoided.

3) Symptoms-only way of working: these medications only work on symptoms such as inflammation and pains, but have no effect on the veritable cause of the yeast infection of the vagina.

The holistic approach is the one that really addresses the root of the issue without any negative impact. Therefore any patient suffering from vaginal yeast infection should improve the situation by avoiding drugs and by using a healthier method based on holism. OTC medication for yeast infection of the vagina is really only for short-term relief and does not provide a long-term remedy. If you really want to get rid of yeast infection, other solutions than those of the pharmacy will be required. The holistic program to cure yeast infection of the vagina goes much further and is far safer than any medication bought over-the-counter.
