If external stimulus is applied to the brain, it becomes possible to alter the brain waves from one stage to another. For example, if a person is in beta stage meaning they are highly alert and a stimulus of 10Hz is applied to their brain for some time, the brain frequency is likely to change towards the applied stimulus of 10Hz. The effect will be calming and beneficial to the person.

This has been used in treatment of depression, low self-esteem, attention deficit disorder, drug and alcohol addiction and autism, to name a few.
Protoscientists believe that binaural beats may influence the brain in more subtle ways through the entrainment of brainwaves and can be used to produce relaxation and other health benefits.
