The most common way to control your psoriasis is to use an ointment or topical cream. While some of these are over-the-counter, many are prescribed by your doctor. Dovonex, salicyclic acid, tar, and anthralin are all topical treatments.

Doctor prescribed corticosteroids is another common way to control your psoriasis. They help reduce swelling with their anti-inflammatory properties. Some of these may carry side effects, so discuss this option thoroughly with your physician.

Ultraviolet light therapy might be used to control your psoriasis. This treatment requires your skin to be exposed to artificial ultraviolet light B. This phototherapy is especially popular for extensive cases of psoriasis.

In addition to medication from your doctor, you'll also want to adopt a healthy lifestyle to help control your psoriasis. One of the first steps to this is to eat a well balanced diet. This diet should be low in meat and dairy while high in vegetables. Essential Fatty Acids, which can be found in both fish oil and flax seed oil, are important and should be supplemented.

Many people choose to use an alternative form of therapy to help control their psoriasis. This might take the form of acupuncture or a traditional Eastern form of healing such as qigong. These alternative therapies are meant to complement traditional Western treatment and not used alone.

Natural topical remedies from your kitchen pantry can also be used. These include apple cider vinegar, which can be applied to the scalp or the nails. Either vegetable or olive oil can be added your bath to reduce itching. A baking soda and water mixture can be made and applied directly to the itching patches of skin with a washcloth.

Stress can make your psoriasis worse, so reducing stress in your life is an important part of controlling psoriasis. You can do this with exercise, yoga, breathing exercises, or meditation.

Work closely with your doctor to discover the best ways to control your psoriasis. While there is not yet a cure, there are many steps that you can take to help reduce the pain and the severity of your psoriasis outbreaks.
