Vaginosis, better known as bacterial vaginosis, is caused by changes in the kinds of bacteria living in a woman's vagina. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) was formerly known as Gardnerella vaginitis but is rarely called that anymore. Bacterial vaginosis is an infection caused by excessive growth of unhealthy bacteria normally present in the vagina. These bacteria are typically harmless and live within the vagina without causing any problems, but, when their numbers increase they may cause any number of symptoms of BV.

Douching may be a triggering cause of bacterial vaginosis by upsetting the natural balance of the vaginal environment.

Sometimes there is a fishy odor often associated with bacterial vaginosis caused by certain bacteria. Many women find that after intercourse the odor is more pronounced.

This problem falls into a gray area because it is not considered a sexually transmitted disease because even a virgin female can have BV but it is more common in women who have more sexual partners.

Bacterial vaginosis can increase the risk of getting PID or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease after a surgical procedure, such as a hysterectomy or an abortion or even just in general. Sometimes treatment methods such as using a douche can push the infection deeper into the body triggering PID.

Do you want to run the risk of an STD? Having bacterial vaginosis can increase the chances of getting other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as HIV, chlamydia, etc. Women with HIV who get bacterial vaginosis have a higher risk of passing HIV to a sexual partner.
