As much as 20% of the population will be diagnosed with Attention deficit disorder (ADD) at some point in their lives. The signs of ADD include displaying inappropriate inattention, impulsivity, and sometimes hyperactivity for their mental and chronological age. ADD may be diagnosed as with or without hyperactivity. ADD with hyperactivity is also known as Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.

Many times a person is diagnosed with ADD or ADHD at a young age, usually ages 8 to ten. Generally, the younger a child is when he/she is diagnosed with this disorder the more severe it may become. The older a child is when he/she is diagnosed the less severe the disorder may be.

Characteristics of ADD include but are not limited to:

Inattention meaning he/she will often fail to finish something once it has been started. This also means they will show signs of not listening, will be easily distracted, and find it difficult to concentrate in school.

Impulsivity includes acting before thinking something through. He/she may have a hard time staying with one activity for a period of time, requires constant supervision, and may act out in class.

Although ADD can be diagnose with or without hyperactivity. If hyperactivity is a problem he/she will experience problems with sitting or standing in one place for a long period of time. He/she will also have a problem with excessive moving during sleep.

ADD is not due to any other disorder such as schizophrenia or a mental retardation. Many times this disorder will cause children to act as though they have had too much sugar. You should know that this is not the case or cause of the disorder. There are ways to have you child tested to find out if they suffer from ADD or ADHD. Doing this would be in the best interest of your child and your family. Be aware of the signs and symptoms of this disorder. Take care of your child so that they will be able to live a happy and healthy life.
