Yoga Not For You? Think Again

Yoga, one of the earliest forms of self-improvement, might seem a discouraging task for those who have never tried it. Its approach is gentle and it helps limber up those people with bodies that are not so flexible. Often times, people hesitate to attempt any of those postures thinking it is an impossible feat. This is upon seeing men and women that are meagerly dressed contorting their body in positions, an ability that seemed impossible.

Yoga is one of the oldest systems of self-development and its gentle approach can help even the most inflexible of bodies to gently yield and limber up. The key to Hatha yoga is that it is non-competitive and progress comes through practice rather than forcing the body into extreme positions when its not ready. Yoga is more than an exercise regime; those who study this discipline say that it simply becomes a way of life.

The effects are noticeable too. Stronger muscles, greater flexibility and an inner calm cannot help but be projected outwards. Family and friends may not be able to pinpoint the difference but they will gradually notice that there is something different.

In yoga, the body postures are otherwise known as "asanas" and "pranayama" for the breathing. Both the body postures and breathing took part in relaxing the body and mind, increasing the vitality and flexibility, and the feeling of calmness in times of crisis. A calm feeling and inward confidence helps people endure stresses and strains in life, in this current society.

Yoga brings clarity of mind and confidence to the serious student who practices with focus and intent every day. The best time to practice is in the morning, although for many, the body seems stiff and achy in the early hours, so the yoga session can be adapted so that it suits the individuals body and agenda.

Everyone, may it be young or old, can practice yoga. There are no limits on who can and who cannot. The most important aspect required is the desire and intent to learn. Disability or age may slow down the movement but progress can still be achieved even if the movement is minimized.

Ideally, it is beneficial for beginners to go to a class and therefore, experience expert guidance so that they know they have the correct alignment within each posture. The teacher will also explain the benefits of each posture and will show the posture in its early and more developed stages.

In some cases and specific circumstances, like pregnancy, some postures are to be avoided. The instructor should be aware of these conditions and more importantly in case of illnesses as to insure the safety of the person involved.

Yoga is a nice practice due to the fact that it can be done just anywhere and anytime. You can practice at home, at the office, the beach and even at the backyard, though it is expected that people passing by will surely take a curious glance.
