Gastric Pacemaker - An Option For You?

Newer technology is coming out to help fight the epidemic of obesity in the world. In the United States, nearly one-third of the adult population is obese. Many children are obese as well.

In some cases, a new technology called the gastric pacemaker is being used to help certain individuals with medical disorders that lead to weight gain. One example of an organization that advocates the use of the gastric pacemaker is the Medtronic Obesity management system, which was created in 2005.

This procedure is a fairly new one and has opened up a whole new world for many chronically obese people. However, it has also raised quite a few questions in the minds of many people. The main question is deciding if this particular treatment is right for those that use it.

One way to decide if a gastric pacemaker is right for you is to educate yourself on how it works and what it would do for you if you have purchased one. This gastric pacemaker works by way of a concept called gastric electrical stimulation (GES). This type of stimulation comes from that of a pacemaker device, which sends low-level electrical signals to the stomach.

GES is a type of gastric stimulation that is currently under investigation by the United States and has not been approved by the FDA yet. Surgeons are the ones that apply the GES system at a level that is appropriate for them.

Further studies need to be done as to exactly how the GES system for weight loss works. However, the goal of this device is to relax the stomach and stimulate it in a way that causes a person to feel full. That way a person will not eat as much. In other words, an exact science as to how it works has not been pinpointed, but those who are testing it know it does work.

If you are interested in learning more about the GES treatment you can possibly ask a doctor or specialist who specializes in medically prescribed weight loss treatments and surgeries. Medtronic will be doing further clinical studies on this treatment again in due time, and if you want to find out if you would quality for it you can contact them.

Not only can you ask a doctor or specialist about the GES treatment, but you can also ask that person about other types of obesity treatment. You will most likely be prescribed a regular diet and exercise plan in the process and your doctor will recommend various surgical procedures as he or she learns more about your overall health history. Often this health history will be discussed with a surgeon if need be.

Other types of surgeries for weight loss include gastric bypass surgeries, which are stomach reduction surgeries, and liposuction, which is the removal of fat cells by way of suction. Each type of surgery has its own risks involved and those risks should be discussed with a doctor before undergoing any type of obesity treatment. This is true whether you gain access to a gastric pacemaker or whether you receive other type of surgical treatment.

Once you have done more research and asked the questions, you need to ask your doctor before scheduling a particular type of treatment. This is true whether you have a have a gastric pacemaker implanted within you, or whether you have a different type of surgery performed on you. If you educate yourself about different types of procedures and you know which one is right, you will be ready to receive the help you need for a better quality of life.

Once you have chosen a particular procedure, you will need to remember to follow all the guidelines that the surgeon and/or doctor gives you. This will ensure better chance of success before, during, and after the surgery. Not only will you need to follow a particular diet and exercise plan but also you will have to take all precautions the day of your treatment. For example, for some types of treatments, you may need someone to drive you home.
