To fully understand the anti-virus software you will first need to know what a computer virus is. A virus is a small program that downloads on your computer with out your knowledge of doing so. These may viruses may enter your computer through e-mail or while you are on the internet and you receive those annoying pop-ups. Viruses also cause many types of problems with your computer such as making it run much slower than before or causing your hard drive to crash. Many viruses have been known to send your personal information (e-mail address, home address, or other information stored on your computer) to another party, which could cause havoc on your life.

Viruses can also use your e-mail account to send it to your contacts, causing their computer to crash as well. A computer virus can at times seem worse than the plague.

It is always much easier to prevent your computer from getting these plague like viruses than it is to get rid of them once you have them. This is why your computer needs anti-virus software.

Things to know before you run out and buy anti-virus software is to first check your computer for pre-installed software. Many new computers are shipped with anti-virus software already on them, all you need to do is turn them on and start running it. Second is to check with your retailer. If you purchased your computer from a local store or even if you bought it from someone you know, call and ask if they have already installed the software on your computer or if they have the software you need. Many retailers have the software needed for your computer in stock, they may also offer discounts since you bought the computer from them.

Lastly, once you have installed the software on your computer, be sure to keep the customer service number on hand just in case you have any questions about the product. Also, be sure you update your software regularly because there are always new viruses being made and you never know when you may need it. Many of the anti-virus software will update itself automatically, but you need to be sure and check it anyway.
