Computer and online gaming are extremely popular now - so much so that they have become huge multimillion dollar businesses. There are different games for different audiences - for children and for adults - and new games are being designed every day. The two main kinds of games are Role Playing Games, or RPG - they can be played by a single player or a number of players, depending on the features of each game - and Massive Multi-Player Games, which are played by many players.

When you take part in a Role Playing Game, you will take on a new character and persona, a role you will play in the game. There will be rules in each game within which you have to function, but within those rules, you can choose your actions and your actions will decide the direction the game takes. This can make a very interesting hobby and pastime because of the freedom it gives.

The primary objective of role playing games is having fun. This makes them quite different from the usual card, puzzle, arcade and other games. More than competition, RPG lean towards collaboration and socialising.

These Role Playing Games work like a series on TV - they are like episodes, or sessions, running from one to the next. You can either play against your computer, or you can play against other gamers in your network. Each session has to be played out, and can take a long time - weeks or even months, depending on which game you are playing and what your strategy is.

You can find different kinds of RPG - some are based on fantasy, like Dungeons and Dragons, and some others, for example Call of Duty, are based on the real world, though rather exaggerated. The main story and theme of these games will go on through sessions. As you play on and reach new levels, there will be new elements added, like new characters or new twists.

Even though you can choose who you would like to be in an RPG, you have a set of characters to choose from, each with characteristics and abilities that are predefined. Let us take X-Men, as an example - you can be any of the X-Men, but, just like in the comic, each character's abilities are already decided and you cannot change them or invent new ones.

In comparison, the Massive Multi-Player Games require the compulsory participation of several players. They are not for individual or two players. The objective here is to create complexity and bigger challenges.

The main differences between RPG and MMP are that MMP requires you to be online, pay a monthly subscription and be connected to hundreds and thousands of players at the same time. A popular MMP is EverQuest, a 3D fantasy-themed game set in an alternative universe. Another common name for MMP is Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG).
