Firewalls for your computer are meant to block malware from entering you computer. Malware will scan your computer for the weakest areas and attempt to break it while it is down on its knees. Without firewalls your computer can be taken right out from under you in no time at all.

For those who turn the computer off when it is not in use, you are at least attempting to keep your computer safe. Unfortunately, this will also hurt your computers power supply. This is due to the excess use of the power button. You should always disconnect from the internet when it is not being used, this saves your power supply and will help reduce the chance of computer hijackers taking what is yours.

Having firewalls active at all times will help tremendously when it comes to being connected to the internet for long periods of time. The use of firewalls, anti virus, and anti spyware software will keep your computer safe. You should update these regularly so your computer stays as safe as possible.

There are two different types of firewalls that you could use hardware and software. Like many computer users know, these have both advantages and disadvantages. So, what is the difference?

Hardware firewalls are external devices that are situated between your computer and your network. They are generally used with multiple computers on the same network. An advantage of hardware firewalls is that they run on their own operating system, which helps with any additional protection. A disadvantage of this type of firewall is that it is more expensive than software firewalls.

Software firewalls are generally inexpensive and can be purchased and installed at most computer stores. Like with other downloads from the internet there is a risk of downloading the wrong product, or getting a virus, therefore you should try to install your firewalls from either a CD or a DVD.

Many times the firewalls will be configured and ready to use, but you should always check the documentation included with the installation software for the firewalls you will be using. This will let you know if this is the type of firewall that you will need. If you have any questions about the installation of the firewalls you can ask any associate at the store where you purchased the software or you can find the correct information on the internet.

Just remember to update your firewalls, anti virus, and anti spyware software regularly. Disconnect from the internet when it is not in use, and go ahead and turn off the computer when it will not be in use for an extended period of time.
